One of the most influential artists/entertainers in the world passed away yesterday.. Michael Jackson was a big influence on my childhood days.. I loved watching his music videos and gettin' down to his tunes.. To this day.. anytime I hear the drum intro to Billie Jean at any party.. you'll see me on the dance floor.. even if I'm the only one on the dance floor.. His contributions to music/video will live on forever..

Another sad passing yesterday.. My elementary school crush.. Farrah Fawcett lost her brave battle to cancer.. Charlie's got an angel in heaven now..

Also check this video of a 1:1 scale Gundam RX-78 being constructed in Japan (duh).. Full detail down to the joints and decals.. I know they actually have a real and fully functional version hidden from the U.S. somewhere.. Fo'real!..

I can't wait to see it when it gets dirty/gritty like this 1:1 scale Gundam..

With the advent of HD video capable D-SLRs.. I think you'll be seeing more support rigs like the Redrock Micro Video SLR Bundles at weddings and other life events.. This makes sense for pro and prosumer photographers who already have a host of different lenses.. and have recently purchased a Nikon D90 or a Canon 5D MkII.. and are interested in getting into the video sector..

Follow focus ring/gears.. shoulder mount.. handgrips.. matte box.. and more.. This can make things very interesting.. Very interesting..

Loving this PhosPhor E-Ink wristwatch .. Thin profile and ergonomic curved case provide a comfortable fit.. But more importantly.. this watch uses E-Ink technology to display the time.. The Holga 120-3D looks like a cool pair of old school night vision goggles.. However it's actually a stereoscopic camera.. Each lens takes a photo of the same subject.. at slightly different angles.. The result is if you create slides from the shots taken.. mount them on 3d slide mounts.. and view them on a 3d slide viewer.. you'll see them in 3d.. Lots of work.. but worth it..

The camper part of me.. the climber part of me.. and the designer part of me.. really appreciate the Kampenwand table by Nils Holger Moormann.. Normally on their own.. untreated wood.. raw iron.. and rope.. don't do much for me.. However.. in this case.. I love how it all looks good together.. with the bright red climbing rope accenting the raw wood and iron.. Note that the rope is functioning to keep the iron brackets tensioned.. so that the table doesn't fall appart when a load is applied to the table.. Very nice..

Known for their motorcycle boots.. Alpinestars now has a series of street kicks called the Shibuya.. It's a nice clean shoe that comes in a variety of colors and material/texture choices.. I saw this one come out a few years ago as a manned mini-tank.. but it now looks like it's evolved to be an un-manned high-speed escort tank.. The Ripsaw MS1 is as tough and dangerous as it looks.. At 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.. it's faster than the majority of sports cars on the street! Operated by one remote driver.. and one remote gunner.. this thing can hunt you down at a top speed of 80mph.. Terrain is not a factor with this one.. Check the vids after the jump..

I really like Mattias Vox's re-vision of the 60's Volvo P1800.. Slated for low volume production.. I wonder if it will ever make it to North America.. I'd like to see a similar re-visit on a 60's Alfa GTA..

Also found this beautiful moulded plywood chair.. It too was originally designed in the 60's.. And is being made again.. and sold again..

I came across a couple of new paintball handguns that caught my eye recently.. Can come in handy for CQB practice etc..

Kingman has produced two new paintball handguns.. The Eraser (all aluminum) and the Chaser (aluminum/polymer).. which use a new smaller paintball size.. at 11mm (.43cal) instead of 17mm (.68cal).. The smaller caliber allows for a smaller form factor.. and more paintballs can fit into the grip/magazine.. It in now more concealable.. more close quarter combative.. more realistic in size..

But if you like big guns.. Tippmann has produced the TPX paintball handgun.. It fires the traditional 17mm (.68cal) paintball.. Picatinny rail.. ammo window.. plus many more features..

Check out the mad sculpting skills of Willard Wigan.. At first glance you may think nothing of it.. But when you realize that his work fits inside the eye of a needle.. or on top of a pin head.. and that you need a microscope to view his micro-sculptures.. You then realize the difficulty of the task.. In order to work.. Willard needs to slow his heartrate and work between heartbeats like a sniper.. Even local traffic outside creates unwanted vibrations.. and therefore he works on his projects in the middle of the night.. Cah-ray-zee.. I wonder if I can commision a mech sculpture with him.. hmmm...

Spotted a couple of things I liked over at Oki-Ni..

First is the Raf Eastpak New Backpack.. Oversized and slouchy.. with demin and leather as the materials.. Nice..

And also this Porte Monnaie.. made with flash spun high density polyethylene and some leather.. The Polyethylene has that Japanese paper look and feel.. But is way more resilient than paper.. Also nice..

On my way back to North America.. I spotted my first Louis Vuitton Waterproof Keepall.. and I must say I really like this bag.. I think the black handles.. straps.. zippers.. and webbing give it a more masculine look.. And yes.. with the waterproof zipper done up.. the bag is indeed waterproof.. even when submerged.. If it's good enough for Bond.. it's good enough for me..

SLRs are naturally heavier than most point-and-shoot cameras.. But if picture quality is what you're after.. an SLR still can't be beat for most situations.. The only thing is that if you're going to be carrying it around for a prolonged amount of time.. it tends to get left behind.. Taking photos at night only exacerbates the problem.. That's because an external flash with a tilting head will be needed if you want to take decent indoor photos as night.. By "boucing" the light off a ceiling.. the resulting photos look more natural and softer.. and more "pro"..

However.. have no fear.. you can now use the Light Scoop which enables you to use your SLR's built-in flash.. You add minimal weight to the camera.. and you get that soft and natural look in your photos.. Keep in mind that it takes longer to cycle than with a traditional external setup.. but you have to sacrifice that for lightness and compactness.. A very handy accessory in my book..

I was going to grab the new Canon G10 for my next trip.. but a photographer friend of mine convinced me to go with the older but higher performing Nikon D40.. It's bigger and heavier (but is still one of the lightest and most compact full D-SLRs).. but you will get way better photos.. An SLR still can't be beat in the all arounds.. Yes the new point-and-shoot has higher/bigger megapixelization.. but the older D-SLR has the customization and lens speed I'm looking for.. (the G10 lens is way to slow for those non-flash low-light situations..) and at sub $500 (at tad cheaper than the G10).. I won't cry if it gets lost/stolen/dropped.. Perfect..

I also grabbed some Camera Armor to keep my Nikon D40 safe from bumps.. dust.. scratches.. while moving around and using the camera.. Made from elastomeric silicone.. the armor not only protects.. but also add extra grip-ability.. while still keeping the full functionality of all the buttons and knobs.. Available in black or smoke colors.. The kit comes with protection for the camera body.. a bumper-hood for the lens.. a lens cap lanyard.. and a polycarbonate LCD shield.. Nice..

The problem with LED ligthing has been that a normal LED emits about 800 lumens.. compared to about 1500 lumens for a regular lightbulb.. So in order to compensate for this.. the LEDs have to be clustered to achieve the same amount of brightness.. These issues have been resolved by the ultra powerul Phlatlight White Series LEDs.. Now only one LED is needed instead of an array.. A single SST-90 can provide up to 2250 lumens.. and the CST-90 can pump out 2750 lumens.. All you lightheads and LEDheads can check the specs for further details..

Seen images of this car floating around the past couple of weeks now.. and I've gotta be honest with you here.. I don't really like the other existing Pagani models much.. but the Zonda-R really catches my eye.. I think it's because the roof scoop reminds me of my all-time fave.. and the gold on black also helps.. Oh ya.. Mercedes AMG 6-litre 750hp with 6-speed sequential pushing a lighter body with custom Ohlins suspension is bonus too..

When I was a kid.. I remember designing a car that looked pretty much like the Rinspeed iChange.. The main difference is that this car can change it's shape to accomodate extra passengers when needed..

The seating configuration is similar to a McLaren F1 roadcar.. Driver middle-front.. passengers on each side south of the driver.. When the driver rides solo.. the roofline keeps a tight and low teardrop contour.. This translates into efficient aerodynamics.. When a passenger or two hop along for a ride.. the roof is raised up to accomodate the required extra headroom.. Genious..

Lightweight at just 1050kg.. the 150Kw electric 6 speed motor can propel this vehicle to 220km/h.. and accelerates from 0-100km/h in just over 4 seconds..

A new series is coming out this month.. It's called the G-Shock Military-Inspired Series.. The cases and bands are matte.. including the black ion plated buttons.. In Japan.. they are called the Men In Rusty Black Series.. And it looks like the Japanese series gets an extra watch that won't be coming over here.. It's the Riseman :: GW-9200.. Me likes..

This guy Theo Jansen is an awesome kinetic sculptor.. He makes some very unique sandcreatures as per the video here.. They rely on the power of the wind to generate their beautiful bio movements.. My favorite is the Animaris Rhinoceros.. The video shows someone pushing it from behind.. but with a strong enough wind.. it will go on it's own..

It can even shoot grenade rounds that can travel accurately towards target up to 175 metres away.. and deliver three types of strikes.. armor piercing.. high explosive.. or fragmentation.. This stuff is almost as good as duct tape.. And if you haven't heard of it.. it's called Plasti Dip.. I used it to put a black rubberized coating on some zipper pulls that were a little too shiny and noisy for my taste.. Now my coat looks stealth and I have a more positive grip when zipping/un-zipping.. The coating sticks to almost anything and remains pliable even in cold conditions.. Re-grip old tools.. make ends for frayed rope.. Waterproof parts.. Comes in an assortment of colors.. as well as clear.. Tons of applications.. Very nice material to play with..

Just got myself a Zuca Sport today.. The bag comes in multiple frame and insert colors to choose from.. I chose the black on black combination with non iluminating wheels.. The frame is made from aluminum and has an integrated telescoping handle.. What sets it apart is that the bag also doubles as a chair.. Designed from the ground up.. it is built sturdy.. yet is still light.. It can support up to 300 lbs of sustained downforce!.. Double stacked wheels enable it to handle the tallest curbs without scratching the frame.. With lots of cargo space and internal/external pockets.. this is the perfect bag for me to transport all my work materials around.. and can even have a seat/set up shop anywhere.. Very nice..
