| RICE and MICE..
Are the Fundamentals to a quick healing
factor.
Immediately after injury..
Usually follows swelling, redness
(discoloration), and pain. This is how your body communicates to you
not to move the injured site so that it can facilitate repair. The
sooner the swelling subsides, the sooner the recovery. Swelling can be
reduced by the following.
R I C E
Rest: Remove the injury from further
activity. Allow the body to
initiate the healing process.
Ice
· Icing helps to reduce swelling by contracting blood
vessels and surrounding tissues. Contracted blood vessels release less
fluid into the injured site. Icing also slows the firing of pain
receptors.
Compression: Wear a tensor around the
injured site. This reduces
swelling by acting as and artificial contractor. The tensor keeps the
muscles compressed, thus compressing the blood vessels, hence reducing
fluid release.
Elevate: Try to keep the injury at heart
level. This redirects
fluid release and pooling by using gravity. Thus exchanging old blood
with new.
Your body will heal to accommodate what it
is exposed to. If in the recovery process all you are doing is resting,
your body will heal only to the demands of rest. Once you expose it to
activity, it may be susceptible to re-injury beyond the demands of
rest.
As soon as you are able..

Movement within tolerance: Challenge your
injury through tolerable movement and
stress. This demands the body to adapt and adjust accordingly during
the healing process by promoting proper muscle fiber repair and
alignment; and by replacing scar tissue.

When swelling is no longer a factor, safely challenge the injury
through stretching, exercise, and natural ranges of motion.
By following these easy steps, you can
increase the speed of your healing factor.
